BEST MATTRESS FOR KEEPING COOL
ANS Awards – Best Mattress for Keeping Cool
In performing the analysis for the awarding of the Awesome Night Sleep (ANS) Best Mattress Award, we thoroughly assessed which mattress is the best mattress for keeping cool. (See Best Mattress Award) We took into consideration millions of data points. We objectively reviewed and rated mattresses based on algorithms, analytics, and extremely sophisticated models, rather than counting on the opinion of one person’s subjective experience sleeping on a mattress for two weeks. (See Methodology)
The competition was fierce. There are many mattresses that do an awesome job at keeping sleepers from overheating.
Furthermore, there are many ways to keep sleepers cool. Mattress companies keep heat away by having the following:
- (1) Cooling materials in the cover (Bear – Celliant Technology; Layla – Thermo-Gel; Alexander Signature – Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric; Nectar – Aloe; DreamCloud – Cashmere)
- (2) Special materials added to the foam (Bear, Tomorrow – Graphite; Layla, PangeaBed – Copper; Loom & Leaf – Medical Grade Cooling Gel; GhostBed – Aerated Latex; Brooklyn Signature – TitaniumGel™)
- (3) Foams with open cell structure (Bear, Casper, Helix, Tomorrow, Brooklyn Signature – TitanFlex™)
- (4) Convoluted air flow foam (Layla, Loom & Leaf)
- (5) Coils (that offer air movement) rather than foam (Helix, Saatva, DreamCloud, Brooklyn Signature)
- (6) Alternative materials that promote air flow (Purple – Smart Grid Technology)
Our cutting-edge modeling and analytics took into consideration all of these ways. Moreover, we weighed the impact of each and synthesized how sleepers reacted. In the end, we were able to rate and rank each mattress on how well they were able to keep sleepers cool and give them an Awesome Night Sleep.
So with no further hubbub, the awarding of the Best Mattress for Keeping Cool goes to … PangeaBed.
PangeaBed keeps sleepers cool with its Copper, that is an excellent thermal conductor, and Talalay Latex, that gives the mattress unimpeded air flow and full ventilation. Coming in second is Purple. Purple with its hyper-elastic polymer ‘Smart Grid’ technology does fantastically well at keeping heat away. Purple is followed by Bear and then Helix. Bear keeps sleepers cool with its Celliant fabric cover and graphite gel infused memory foam top layer, while Helix has individually pocketed coils and foam with an open cell structure. Please see information on all four and on the other winners below.
The coolest mattress. In addition to the brilliantly knitted, breathable cover – the copper and Talalay latex in the second layer and Cloud Foam in the third layer keep the sleeper cool. Copper as an excellent thermal conductor, cools down the mattress quickly whenever there is a build up of heat. Additionally, Talalay Latex with its large open-cell structure, gives the mattress unimpeded air flow and full ventilation. (Dissimilarly, Dunlop Latex, a material many competitors use, has a smaller cell structure that causes heat retention.) Lastly, PangeaBed’s Cloud Foam also disburses heat. This newly developed foam allows maximum air flow to reduce humidity and avoid heat buildup. In fact, according to PangeaBed’s website, the Cloud Foam allows 298% more air to flow freely, giving individuals an awesome sleeping environment. See PangeaBed 2018 Mattress Review
Purple mattress ranks one of the highest in breathability and keeping individuals from sleeping hot. Purple hyper-elastic polymer ‘Smart Grid’ technology provides air flow channels that keep the sleeper temperature-neutral – neither hot nor cold. Instead of sleeping right on the foam, the grid formation elevates the body above the foam so air can flow freely below. Additionally Purple’s original stretch cover is not only soft and stretchable, but it is breathable to promote cooling airflow. See Purple Mattress Review

The Celliant fabric cover and graphite gel infused memory foam layer keep the sleeper exceptionally dry and cool. First, the Celliant technology is woven into the mattress cover to improve oxygenation, thereby aiding blood flow and helping the body maintain its temperature. Second, the graphite gel infused memory foam top layer combines open-cell, high air-flow foam with superconducting graphite particles. As a matter of fact, the foam dissipates heat and moisture much faster than regular foam mattresses and the graphite keeps the mattress up to seven times cooler than traditional memory foam. The entire Helix mattress promotes a cool sleeping experience. The cover is good for cooling as it is not too thick. The Helix Dynamic foam top layer reduces heat retention. The pocketed microcoils second layer with its individually pocketed coils offers improved air flow. Lastly, the High-Grade Polyfoam bottom layers with their open cell structure allow ample air to flow through the material.. See the Helix Sleep Mattress Review
The cover and top two layers of the Tomorrow Sleep Memory Foam mattress do an amazing job of keeping sleepers cool and ensuring they have an Awesome Night Sleep. First of all, the cover is made of fabric that is soft and thin and cool to the touch. It has very small pores that make it breathable, allow for the inflow and outflow of air, and disperse heat. Next, the top layer of Cooling Open-Cell Memory Foam is infused with graphite to keep excess heat away from the body so individuals can sleep in cool comfort. Lastly, the middle layer of Pressure Relieving Gel Swirl Memory Foam helps dissipate heat. Both top layers are comprised of breathable open cell construction. This open cell construction, combined with the cooling graphite, permits air to pass through, regulates temperature, and gives individuals the perfect sleep climate. The combination of the the convoluted air flow foam layer, the Thermo-Gel infused cover, and the copper infused foam layer help keep the sleeper cool. The convoluted air flow foam layer, shaped like an egg carton, provides great air flow and helps disperse heat very well. The Thermo-Gel infused cover provides not only a great design and comfort, but imparts coolness to the touch. Lastly, copper is an excellent thermal conductor and absorbs heat, rapidly transferring it away from the sleeper’s body. This powerful three headed combination is designed to dissipate heat more efficiently than traditional memory foam. The softer side is reported to be warmer. See Layla Sleep Mattress Review
Unlike many memory foam mattresses, the Saatva innerspring mattress does not retain heat and provides for a cool night sleep. Features that keep their mattress cool include the organic cotton backed cover and the steel coil systems which allow for greater airflow between the springs. See Saatva Mattress Review
The DreamCloud Mattress will definitely keep you cool! Starting from the top cover, because cashmere is a naturally moisture-wicking fabric, it will keep you many times cooler than foam or cotton. Just below the cover, the gel in the memory foam improves airflow and releases trapped heat. Further, below the memory foam, the natural latex traps heat less than regular foams. Next, the innerspring coils are perfectly spaced to promote excellent airflow. Lastly, a heat treated cotton pad on the bottom regulates temperature to help you sleep cool. Furthermore, all features work together so you don’t overheat by sinking too far into the mattress, but rather stay cool by sleeping above it. Moreover, hybrid mattresses are the highest rated mattress type for keeping sleepers cool. See DreamCloud Mattress Review
In order to keep sleepers even cooler, Alexander Signature Series® Beds have Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric in their covers. Thus, in addition to reducing heat with their breathable High Density Gel Memory Foam and their SmartFlow Air Flow Foam, both mattresses now have the Thermic Phase Change Cooling Fabric. Now with the cooling fabric, the materials work even better together to keep sleepers cooler. Additionally, sleepers are kept on top of the mattress, instead of in it, which helps keep them even cooler. See Alexander Signature Mattress Review
From the luxurious cover and spinal gel layer on top to the transition and base layers on the bottom, an individual will sleep cool on a Loom & Leaf mattress. The cover, though nice-to-the-touch and quilted with a 5/8” foam layer, is breathable. The spinal gel layer maintains a targeted cool zone to the area of the body that generally retains heat, while the gel memory foam helps sleepers stay at least 30% cooler than regular memory foam. The top layers patented “gel-on-gel” design uses airy convoluted foam and a “gel-swirl”construction technique that provides even distribution and a cooling sensation throughout the foam layer. Lastly, the dual layer support foam has breathable airflow channels that provide for a cool night’s sleep. The cooling gel is medical grade and is typically found in Burn units at Hospitals. See Loom & Leaf Mattress Review
Top layer of aerated latex foam and middle layer of gel infused memory foam reduces heat retention and gives the sleeper a cool sleep. Due to the latex foam layer, the sleeper gets the benefit of the comfort of memory foam without the heat build-up associated with it. Additionally, the soft, thin, polyester, zippered mattress cover offers great airflow and allows the aeration from the mattress to come through. Although not reviewed here, the GhostBed Luxe is even cooler with its Ghost Ice Fabric and Ghost Ice Layer. See GhostBed Mattress Review
Very cool! The Casper mattress has two main fantastic features that keep a sleeper from overheating. The first is the hand-sewn, high quality polyester/polypropylene blend cover. It is stretchy, breathable, and specifically designed to keep the sleeper cool. The second awesome cooling feature is the breathable open-cell foam in the comfort layer. This open-cell foam has tiny pores that promote great airflow and dissipate heat. This foam offsets the traditionally warm memory foam directly beneath it. See the Casper Mattress Review
Brooklyn Bed’s patented TitaniumGel™ promotes staying cool and relishing in an Awesome Night Sleep. Infused in the top layer of TitanFlex™ Foam, the TitaniumGel™ pulls heat away from the body, allows for better airflow, and keeps the body cool throughout the night. Additionally, the TitanFlex™ Foam has an open-cell structure that wicks moisture from the body and the Ascension Pocketed Coil system is designed to allow greater airflow between the springs. See Brooklyn Signature Mattress Review
The Nectar mattress is designed with breathability in mind. It sleeps cool, gently regulating temperature all night long, giving the sleeper an Awesome Night Sleep. The cover promotes excellent air circulation and has below an added aloe based cooling layer that keeps away heat. The Lush foam layer, with its medical grade cooling properties, absorbs and distributes heat. And the base layer draws fresh air in through special channels. Even with this great design, high density foam still does keep some people warm. That said, the Nectar mattress is one of the cooler memory foam mattresses available. See Nectar Sleep Mattress Review
