Purple Mattress Review

Purple Mattress Review: Ranked #1 for sleeping cool and no off-gassing. (Click here to see all the ANS Best Mattress Award Winners)

The Purple Mattress has huge positives. To begin with, the Hyper-Elastic Polymer Grid Comfort Layer is incredibly innovative and a huge advancement in technology.  It adapts to sleeper’s unique pressure points for superior comfort, properly aligns the spine in any sleep position, promotes airflow to help sleepers stay cool, and prevents motion-transfer. It also works well with the other two foam layers. All three layers work well to give the sleeper a great balance of soft and firm, but also comfort and support.

Other strong points for the Purple mattress include that it sleeps cool (Click here to see Best Mattress for Keeping Cool) and has pretty much no off-gassing. The Polymer Grid again is the main reason the mattress stays cool. Other areas where the mattress ranked high include in the essential areas of support and durability. Purple also did well in the other attributes area with limited motion transfer, just the right amount of sinkage, decent edge support, no noise, and adequate bounce.

Please see below a summary of all positives and negatives, a company created snippet and snapshot, general information, and finally ratings using the 20 major considerations.

Top 20 ConsiderationsRatingDetail
1Good Value?93.12%Unique, comfortable mattress that is good at providing pain relief and a cool sleep at a reasonable price. Innovative hyper-elastic polymer Smart Comfort Grid technology. Great combination of support, comfort, bounce, pressure relief, and incredible cooling. Even so, it is recommended that buyers purchase stretchy sheets that cost over $100 more. Weighs more, but is thinner and shorter than competitive mattresses.
2Comfortable?93.10%Unique, very comfortable “floating sensation” feel that offers amazing pressure relief. Great combination of Hyper-Elastic Polymer Smart Comfort Grid, polyurethane transition foam, and foundation support poly foam. Conforms well to the body’s curves for most people. Purple hyper-elastic polymer grid comfort layer provides relief for many, but a grid like feel for others.
3Supportive?94.81%Remarkable support. Polymer grid structure helps with distributing weight evenly to relieve pressure, while still providing great support for the body. Comfort grid conforms to pressure points while providing support where the body needs it. Better than many other competitors mattresses for pain relief.
4Durable / Quality Built?94.17%
High quality, uniquely durable combination of foam and lightweight hyper-elastic polymer. Not only comfortable, but attractive. Estimated that will last over 10 years.
5Sleep Cool?95.70%Purple mattress ranks highest in breathability and keeping individuals from sleeping hot. Purple hyper-elastic polymer ‘Smart Grid’ technology provides air flow channels that keep the sleeper temperature-neutral – neither hot nor cold. Instead of sleeping right on the foam, the grid formation elevates the body above the foam so air can flow freely below. Additionally Purple’s original stretch cover is not only soft and stretchable, but it is breathable to promote cooling airflow.
6Warranty? 94.09%10-year non-prorated warranty. Similar to competitors.
7Return Policy?95.94%100 day, no-fee, no-risk, full-money-back trial. If returning mattress, no preparation is necessary.
8Customer Service?94.33%Above average customer service though live chat is not available on their website.
9Good Reputation?96.26%Manufactured in the USA. Began in 2016, but fast making its presence known. High ownership satisfaction. The company discloses mattress specifications. BBB rating of “A.”
10Socially Good?91.81%CertiPUR-US certified. Firegard® Knit Barrier fire retardant. Uses polyurethane foam which is said to be more healthy than latex or memory foam.
11Motion Transfer / No Sinkage?95.09%Even though the Purple mattress provides excellent pressure relief, its superior composition also provides little sinkage compared to many foam mattresses. It springs back quickly like a latex mattress. Because the mattress is thinner than average, some people may have difficulty getting on and off the mattress. Although not as isolating as many memory foam mattresses, sleepers movements on the mattress largely will not disturb the other person.
12Edge Support?91.21%There is a lack of edge support. Similar to other foam mattresses, there may not be support on the far edges for sleeping or sitting. More common for larger people and couples.
13Bouncy?94.07%Hyper-elastic polymer material provides an incredibly responsive feel and bounce. Not as springy as a spring mattress, but more bouncy than a memory foam.
14Noisy?96.26%As is common with most foam mattresses, no noise.
15Off-Gassing?96.71%No Putrid initial odor for almost all Purple mattress purchasers.
16Easy to Handle / Break In / Maintain?93.72%Heavier than average. Hyper-elastic polymer material prevents some of the sagging of typical foam based beds. No side handles make it difficult to move. Easy to unbox and start using. About average time to break-in – 2 weeks. No flipping, but because heavier, it may take more than one person to rotate 2-3 times a year. The mattress cover should only be spot cleaned.
Sleeper Type:
17Good for Backs?95.06%One of the best mattresses for spine support and back pain relief. Unique Smart Grid design dissipates pressure for all sleepers. Amazing support and very comfortable for back sleepers.
18Good for Side Sleep?93.77%Unique Smart Grid design dissipates pressure for all sleepers. Even so, it is reported too firm for some light weight people and side sleepers.
19Good for Stomach Sleep?94.83%Mattress might be too soft for stomach sleepers. If firmness is not an issue, stomach sleepers will like the relief for pressure points and little sinkage.
20Good for Larger Sleepers?94.82%Larger sleepers will like this heavier than average mattress, but may not like that it is thinner than the competition (9.5″ vs. 10″ or 11″) and that it may not be firm enough (6.5 out of 10 compared to the preferred 7 to 8 out of 10).
